The Coal Commission visited the township on Wednesday afternoon for the' purpose of going into the pros and cons of a’ truckers dispute. They left the same evening. _ The death took place m Christchurch on April 29, of an old and respected, resident of Blackball, Mrs. Elizabeth Peterson. . . The late Mrs. Peterson arrived in New Zealand from Ireland with her parents, as a child; in the sailing ship "Eastern Monarch.’’ They settled on the West Coast, where Mrs. Peterson spent most of her life, leaving for Christchurch some years ago, owing to her husband following up Public Works She leaves a husband, three daughters, Mrs. M. Hallinan, Brunnerton, Mrs. A. Goom Christchui ch, and Mrs. J. Mitchell, Lower Hutt, also three sons, Mr. T. Heyward, Blackball, Wilfred, Roa, and Bert Addington, while Mrs. H. Wright, ot Riccarton is a sister. There are also ten grandchildren. The death of Mr. R. Colquhoun, Hart Street, which took place m the Grey River Hospital last Saturday evening, removes a well known and 1 highly respected citizen from our midst and one of the foundation settlers of Blackball, he having arrived here 50 years ago. The late Mr. Colquhoun was a native of Gordonhill, Scotland and came out to Newcastle, New South Wales, when a young man. He entered business i there and after a time he came across I to this country, bringing a wife with I him (a member of the MacDonald I family). They were among the first 1 settlers in Blackball and have lived ' here ever since. In his earlier years, the late Mr. Colquhoun took an active interest in the affairs of the township and held ollice in many different organisations. He was an active member of the Oddfellows I Lodge until a few years ago. Six years ago, he and his wife spent a six month’s holiday in California, where Mr. Colquhoun had -a brother residing in San Deigo. They had a wonderful trip, visiting among other i places, Agua Caliente, the scene of the triumph and ultimate death of the wonder hor.se, Pharlap. The late gentleman was a great lover of gardening, his garden being always a “show” place during the season. He had reached the ripe age of 82 years and was gifted with a wonderful memory. He leaves a widow and I one daughter. The is one grandchild. The sympathy of a wide circle of friends will be extended them in their bereavement. 1 The funeral took place at Karoro cemetery last Tuesday and was well attended. The. service at the home and graveside was conducted by the Rev. Bretell, of the Presbyterian Church. A guard of ‘ honour was ; formed of members of the Loyal Oddfellows’ Lodge, while the pail bearers were D. J. Kidd, Past District. Grand Master, R. Neilson, Past Grand Master, A: Adamson, Past Grand Master and L. Neilson, Noble Grand Mas- | ter, while Mr. G. Anderson, District Grand Master, read the lodge service at the graveside. V.E. Day was received with every manifestation of joy. On Tuesday evening a victory dance was held in the Oddfellows Hall, under the auspices of the “Soldiers Comforts Committee’’. The hall was filled to overflowing with a hilarious crowd. On Wednesday morning the church bells were rung and the mine hooter lent music to the ear. The mines and dredges were idle and a real holiday spirit prevailed. This afternoon, Saturday, Mr.- Beban, the leasee of the Miners’ Hall, puts on a free picture programme for the children. The annual meeting of the Domain Board took place in the Miners’ Hall last Sunday morning, Mr R. Mountford presiding. There was a fair .attendance of the general public. The balance sheet was presented _ and endorsed as satisfactory. Quite a number'of inovations were discussed. The election of officers resulted as follows: President, Mr. R. Mountford, Secretary, Mr. R. Clark, Trustees, Messrs J. Nuttall and C. Hogg. Committee, Messrs A. Kennedy, W. Maloney, Ron Neilson, R. Duncan and J'. Neilson. A sub-committee composed of Messrs A. Kennedy, R. Neilson and the Secretary were appointed to go into the question of a grandstand and other appurtenances on the Domain and report back'. It was agreed that Mr. J. O’Donnell would, along with the Secretary, meet Mr. Trotter, Power Board Engineer on his forthcoming visit of inspection regarding erection of flood lights.
