ENGINEER’S - ANNUAL REPORT. Outside staff having been increased by the re-employment of men discharged from the Armed Forces, and by a few extra hands engaged, the volume of work attended to during the past year shows improvement over that of recent earlier years, states the annual report of the Greymouth Borough engineer (Mr A. J. Fairmaid). Items of note are: Two coats of tar-sealing on Aerodrome Road (52 chains') and Perotti Lane, and a single coat on Leonard Street, Tarapuhi Street to William Street, Tarapuhi Street, Guinness Street, Gresson Street, Arney Street, Murray Street, Tainui Street to Blackmore Street, and Easson’s Hill, Alexander Street, a total length of 94 chains. Two coats of have been applied to footpaths in Marlborough Street, Joyce Crescent to vicinity of Sinnott Road one side; Devon Street, north side; Mount Street, east side; Chapel Street to Moss Street; High Street, south-east side; Marlborough Street to F'aroa Road; Paroa Road, same side; High Street to Shakespeare Street; Richmond Street, one side; Peel Street to north-eastern end; Bright Street, south-western side; Sturge Street to Richmond Street; Blackett Street, south-eastern side: Bright Street to Nelson Quay; Cardwell Street, south-western side; Nelson Quay to F'ox Street, a total of 110 chains; and a single coat to Alexander Street, one side; Murray Street to Thompson Street, Marlborough Street to Palmerston Street and Joyce Crescent on respective sides, and a maintenance coat on the block bounded by the Railway, Tainui Street and Murray Street, including the path on the south-west-ern side of same. In High Street, Paroa Road and Shakespeare Street, around the Railway housing settlement, 28 chains of concrete kerbing and channelling has been constructed. At the intersection of Shakespeare and Winnie Streets the corner has been set back to improve traffic conditions. The superstructure of Erua Moana bridge has been rebuilt and a cantilevered footbridge has been added to the north-eastern side. On Easson’s Hill, Alexander Street, the slip which resulted from road widening operations has given considerable trouble and is continuing to do so but a footbridge has been constructed across it to afford needed access. The reservoir has been kept full by an average daily pump run of 17.94 hours as compared with 16.24 hours for the year ended March 31, 1944. The pumping station, and the reservoir buildings and structures have been overhauled and renovated. The whole is now in keeping with the status of this important public utility. Extensions of the reticulation system have comprised 1326 ft. of 4in. Fibrolite main in Monro and Young. Streets, Marsden and Sinnott Roads. Sewerage of the Newcastle Street block of Cobden has progressed satisfactorily considering the number of men employed, 744 ft. of 21in. and 18in. pipes having been laid in Newcastle and Ward Streets and 200 ft. of 36in. pipes in the relocation of the two crossings of Taylor Creek, the work now being completed almost to Sturge Street. Towards completion of the sewerage system south of the Grey River, the Preston Road sewerage pumping station is under construction, concreting being completed to one-half of the height of the pump and suction chamber walls. In Sinnott and F'aroa Roards, Heaphy and Richmond Streets and at the cemetery, 475 ft. of 6in. and 286 ft. of 9in. pipes have been laid in storm water and sewerage drains. Building permits issued for the year have been for one dwelling valued at £950; three business premises, £12,330; 60 additions to dwellings, £4340; and nine additions to business premises, £1740 —a total of 73 permits for work valued «t £19,360.
