FEARFUL ATROCITIES

By the Japanese (Rec. 10.10.) NEW YORK, April 19. “The Navy has documented proof that Japanese have been guilty of fearful atrocities,” says Admiral Halsey, in an article published in “Collier’s Magazine.” He urged the execution of one Japanese officer for every Allied serviceman murdered. He declared that most of the Japanese atrocity stories had not been exaggerated, and that he possessed proof that some American Marines were vivisected. Some Nuns were subjected to 48 hours continuous rape. There also were definite signs that Japanese practised cannibalism pn Guadalcanal- and Leyte Islands. Admiral Halsey expressed an extremely violent hatred of the Japanese. He urged that those guilty of waxcrimes should be punished, regardless of the rank or position. Admiral Halsey mentioned Field Marshal Teraueji and General Yamashita as deserving of special attention in avenging war crimes. Admiral Halsey recommended that, after victory, the Allied forces should entex- on a prolonged armistice, without a treaty, placing Japan under Allied control and under a Supreme Military Commander, who should be given a free hand, without interference from outside, so that he could take immediate action, without consulting his Home Office, bx' fooling around with a protocol if the Japanese did not comply with military orders. Admiral Halsey concluded: “It would be the greatest crime ,if we let Japan negotiate peace, instead of demanding absolute, unconditional surrender.”
