WESTPORT NOTES

[Our Own Correspondent] WESTPORT, March IS. The Kiwitea sailed yesterday for Auckland. Repairs to the rudder post of the Wingatui were completed on Friday night, and the vessel sailed for Wellington yesterday. The Kaimai has arrived from Wellington, and is to load for that port. The Kaimiro is expected to sail to-day for Auckland. The Holmlea has arrived from Wellington, bringing general cargo. After discharging she is io load coal I'or ' Castlecliff. Mr W. R. Brimsley, Dunedin, <s visiting the district. Mr A. B. Collins left yesterday for Wellington to take up an appointment with the Public Service Department. Mr R. V. Snowden, of Nelson, arrived on Saturday to attend the race meeting. . Mr Vince Cox, President of the Nelson Jockey Club, was a visitor to Westport for the Nelson Jockey Club’s race meeting. , Misses M. Moloney and E. Colvin are spending their holidays at Punakaikai. „ , • Mr R. Thornton, formerly of Granity, and now of Christchurch, is visiting friends in this district. Mr Danks, Vice-President of the Automobile Association, Canterbury; Mr J. S. Hawkes, Secretary; and Mr Bond, assistant patrol officer for the West Coast, attended a meeting of the Westport branch of the Association yesterday. Mr M. B. Eddy and Miss J. Eddy arrived from Nelson on Friday. Mr H. Telford, of Wellington, attended yesterday’s races, in which he had Theorist engaged. Mr H. C. D’Arcy Irvine arrived by plane from Nelson to attend the races. During the four weekly period ended March 3, some 5745 tons of Westport coal were railed to the East Coast, compared with 1620 tons tor the corresponding period in 1944. During February 1588 tons of Charleston coal was railed to the East Coast. The bucket dredge “Maui” was on Friday taken to the sand bank at high tide, and at low tide a new propellor blade, to replace the one broken, was put on by members of the Marine Department’s engineering staff. The Nelson Land Sales Committee will sit at Westport on Tuesday to hear an application for consent to the sale of the Albipn Hotel, Westport, to Mr R. Curragh, by A. D. Batt.
