HOKITIKA NOTES

[Our Own Correspondent] HOKITIKA, March 16. Miss Phillipa Young, of Hokitika, has received advice that she has been awarded the Elocution Exhibition allotted to the South Island by the Trinity College of Music, London. Miss Young is a pupil of the Convent of Mercy, Hokitika. Miss Young, who is just 14 years of age, secured 90 marks, with honours, in the Higher Local Elocution Examination held last year. She is the daughter of Mr D. A. Young, Registrar of Lands and Deeds, Hokitika. Extensive improvements are being made to the lime works at Koiterangi. The works is a co-operative one, owned by the farmers of Westland. The improvements include a new crusher, and extensive bin accommodation, and will cost some £3OOO. When they are completed very ample supplies of burnt lime will be available for farmers throughout the district. Carbonate of lime will be produced. The extra supplies should materially increase the productivity of the district. The Amateur Swimming Club received excellent support in its canvass of the town for donations and trophies, Messrs McPhee and Guigch being .accorded a' vote of thanks from the committee on Thursday evening when they handed in over £2O, and more than two dozen trophies, including four silver medals and two beautifully mounted shields, one for diving and one for swimming. The Club will hold a novelty carnival at the Municipal Baths to-morrow afternoon.

Mr D. G. Gillespie presided at a meeting of the Red Cross Society last evening, when it was decided, on receipt of letters from Timaru and Waimate, to support a protest against the appointment of Mr Meachen as Red Cross Commissioner in the Middle East.
