Cr S. Jenkins drew the Borough Council’s attention to the overgrowth in the cemetery, saying it was a disgrace, and the second cemetery would soon be as bad. The Council, County Council and Cemetery Board should try to remedy matters. Cr C. Howard said the Council had set aside £75 for cemetery improvements. The Cemetery Board had not yet expended the money. The Board had not attempted to keep tTie grounds cleared. The old cemetery was a wilderness. The Cemetery Board should be requested to meet more regularly. Cr C. H. Thomas moved that Nelson Education Board be asked io sanction transfer to the Holland Memorial Committee as a memorial site a section which the Board granted to the Council adjoining the library. The Memorial Committee had £l4OO to commence a building in the nature of a rest room, which would be available for mothers and children from country when visiting town. The building would also be available for townspeople, and would fill a long felt want. By donating the site the Council would not be making any sacrifice. Cr Howard, although in sympathy with the proposal, said the Board’s sanction was essential, as the section was granted for a specific purpose. Cr Thomas said the memorial would nowise interfere with the community centre for which the site was intended. Cr A. Ridsdale said the Board had offered the Holland Memorial Committee portion of the section some years ago on which to erect the building. Cr J. Fairbairn suggested that the Board be asked to grant a substantial lease of the site before any decision was made. Cr S. Jenkins said that the Memorial Committee were prepared to erect a building which would be an asset to the town and district, the Council should do everything to assist. The Mayor said it was a good cause and the Council would be failing in its duty if any obstacle were placed; in the way. The building suggested would fill a long felt need. The motion was carried. The Hector branch of the Labour Party at its recent meeting decided to communicate with Mr Moohan, National Secretary, and request him to make arrangements for Miss Mabel Howard, M.P., to visit the district and address a meeting at Hector.
