PATRIOTIC COUNCIL

MEETING AT GREYMOUTH I A meeting of the Westland Provincial Patriotic Council was held in thGreymouth .Borough Council Chambers last evening. Mr A. R. Elcock (Mayor of Hokitika), presided, and the following delegates were present: Mrs F. A. Shallcrass (GreyWomen’s branch;, Messrs K. O. May (Ross), E. W. Kennedy (Runanga), W. Green (R>.S.A.), W. Clayton (Inangahuaj, M. H. Houston (Hokitika), F’. A. Kitchingham (Greymouth) and j the secretary, H. W. G. Park (Hokitika). I Mr Kitchingham brought up the matter of the sale of tickets in the Victory Art Union, stating sales were exceptionally good in Greymouth. Other delegates reported tickets in each of their dsitricts were commanding a ready sale. Correspondence was received from the National Patriotic Fund Board regarding the quota for 1945, which was approved; also re appointment of Mr E. R. Neale, of Nelson, as the Council’s representative on the Board.—Approved. Donations were acknowledged from the following: Canterbury Education Board, school children’s effort; N.Z. Railway employees; P. and T. employees; Tetaho Social Committee, donation for prisoners of war; Otira Committee, knitting; Self Help Co-op, advertising space; Weheka Committee; Wait aha Settlement; Ross Women’s Institute. An offer of a donation of two quarter-acre sections at Punakaiki, as sites for rest huts for returned servicemen, made by an anonymous Hokitika resident, was accepted with thanks. Messrs Clayton, Green and Kitchingham were appointed a subcommittee with power to add, to go into the matter and report to the next meeting. The suggested rules for the Council, as drawn up by Mr Kitchingham, were approved with minor amend-' 1 ments. The matter of representation for the Brunner and Kumara Boroughs on ihe Council was discussed, and it was decided to make enquiries. Mr Green brought up the question of outstanding donations following 1 the radio appeal. It was reported that locally practically all of the promised donations had been paid.
