DENNISTON NOTES

[Our Own Correspondent]. Mr A. Gibson, who was engaged as a baker at Denniston many years ago, visited the Hill last week looking up old friends. Miss S. Smythe, of Christchurch, is visiting her parents, Mr and Mrs. T. Smythe. Mr A. Phillips, proprietor of lhe Fines Hotel, Fairdown, wa's a recent visitor to Denniston, looking up his many friends. Last week-end a good number ot Denniston people paid a visit to Grey;mouth. . A children’s picnic organised by the Denniston Miners’ Union was held last Saturday, the weather being showery, and most of the day was spent in the Hall, where games and dances were held. Between the showers, races were run outside. The children were served each with a bag of lunch, which had been prepared by the Women’s Institute, and after spending a very happy day every child received a bag of lollies' and a silver coin before returning home. On the 17th inst. a' children’s plain and fancy dress ball, organised by the Women’s Institute, was held, . and proved very, popular, the children acquitting themselves in a manner very creditable to those who conducted the entertainment. Items' were contributed as follows: Song, D. Bradley; duet, A. Smythe and Joan Warne; trio, B. Caldwell, S. Chapman and B. Curragh; piano solo, M. Harrison; play, the Junior Red Cross; dance, the Rumba, R. Watson. Mesdames H. Smith and H. Pearson supplied the music. Many children wore fancy costumes, the prize winners being: Best dress, Shona Nesbit and J'ack Bamford (Bride and Bridegroom); cheapest dress, Alex Hill (Red Indian). Others in fancy! dress were Alison Robertson, Red Cross Nurse; Isa Robertson, Hayes’ Grocery Store; Noel Smythe, Cowboy; Gwen Prentice, Ballet Dancer; Myria Prentice, Carmen Miranda; Bob Gardener, Sheik; Shirlty Chapman, S'onja Heine; Joan Warne and Avis Smythe, Hawaiian Girls; Enid Smythe and Neville Bamford, Sailor Girl and Boy; Muriel Braggins, Back the Attack. Competitions resulted: Statue Barn Dance, Melva Dellaway and Billy Chapman; Lucky Spots, John Smith and partner; Beverley Curragh and partner. An adult dance followed, Mrs H. Smith supplying the music, and Mr W. Hewitson acting as M.C. A waltzing competition was won by Mrs S'. Nesbit and Mr T. Dellaway. Another competition was won by “Wee Wendy of Millerton”. Mrs Woods, of Millerton, was judge of the fancy costumes.
