Placed in South Island

CHRISTCHURCH, Nov. 23

Nearly all cf the members of the Army drafts returning from New Caledonia since May have been placed in industry. The Christchurch District' Manpower Officer. Mr M. Ross, said to-day that 3223 , men were released to the South Island. Of these 1186 have been ■ placed in farming occupations, 86 in coal mining. four in freezing works. 37 in butter and cheese factories, ■ 158 .in sawmills. 536 in building construction, and 410 in New Zealand railwavs.

There were 317 temporary directions, 197 miscellaneous directions, 66 men had been rbmobilised, 169 harf been transferred to other centres. and 57 were still under action.
