JAP CRUELTY

TO AUSTRALIAN PRISONERS CANBERRA, Nov. 22. A firm protest to Tokio against the treatment of Australian prisoners of war by the Japanese has been despached by the Acting-Prime Minister (Mr Forde). The protest, made through the protecting Power, Switzerland, followed disclosures, by Australians rescued from a Japanese prison transport sunk in the China Sea on September 12. This official protest will be supplemented by direct submissions to the United Nations’ War Crimes Commission by the Commonwealth’s special investigator, Sir William Webb. The Minister for External Affairs will make a full statement soon on the legal aspects and responsibility for the treatment of the Australians.
