Rur Own Correspondent J HOKITIKA, November 9. For the fire brigade demonstration here on Saturday, November 25, when all West Coast brigades are expected to be represented, arrangements are well in hand. The night before, a ball will be held and on the following evening a smoke, concert. Members of the local brigade at a gathering on Tuesday were presented by Mr. H. C. Feart with the following:—Gold Star and twoyear bar, Foremen C. B. Ross 37 years’ service, and F. Groufsky 29 years; two-year Silver Bars, Foreman M. M. Davidson, 13 years; Ri Roberts, 17 years; Firemen J. Rutland 17 years; J. J. Mclntosh 23 years, E. M. Lakin. 23 years, F. Groufsky 7 years; Silver Medal for 5 years’ service, Fireman F. Groufsky. Mr. Pear’ stated Fireman W. Thompson would be presented with the Gold Star for 25 years’ service at the Conference next year at Westport.. Mrs. A. Cowdroy who has been in the employ of the South Westland Shipping Company for the past 17 years, was farewelled on Monday by lhe staff and company, on whose behalf Mr. P. Renton, presented j her with a travelling bag. in appreciation of her excellent service. Mrs. Cowdroy -suitably expressed her thanks. „ t , At the Magistrate’s Court, before Mr A. A. McLachlan, S.M.. Elcock, returning thanks, said the committee was highly satisfied. The following applications were granted at lhe Warden’s Court. Te Koeti, renewal of dam license. At the D H. School the swimming ; baths were vesterday opened officially. Miss Halliday (Secretary of. the ■ .School Jubilee Committee) having die . honour of declaring the baths open. Among those present at the gathering were Mr A. C. Armstrong (Chair- ■ man of School Committee), Mr Irwin . (Inspector), Messrs A. E. Lawrence ; and F. L. Turley (Education Board-, Stevens (Rector). Rev. Father Keane ; (representing Hokitika Municipal . Baths Committee), Dr. McKay,, and L. Rowley. An apology was re- • ceived from Mr A. H. Lawn for un- ■ avoidable absence. Durite, the afterl noon children gave exhibitions of fol.t dancing, and a school choir sang two ' plearing numbers. Those present : were entertained at afternoon tea by ' the School Committee. The Rector. ' Mr Stevens, and members of the staff ' expressed pleasure at having the , baths completed.
