WESTPORT NOTES

[Our Own Correspondent J. WESTFORT, November 9. The Kaimai sailed -to-day for Wellington. The Kiwitea is due on Friday from Auckland to load for Wellington. The Kakapo is due at the week-end from Wellington to load for Wellington. Mr. Adam Gibson, Wellington, who was formerly engaged here in the bakery business, is visiting Westport after an absence of several years. Mr. and Mrs. J. Baird, Woodville, are visiting friends in the district. - Crs. C. H. Thomas and C. R. Howard were last evening appointed to) represent the ‘Borough Council on the Executive of the Westport Community Centre. Mr. and' Mrs. C. A. Mitchell, Levin, who have been touring the South Island, left to-day for Nelson.

The funeral of the late James Gordon MacKenzie, who met his death when he fell into the Buller River while going aboard the s.s. Kakapo on Tuesday morning, was held yesterday. Representatives of the Union S.S. Company, returned Servicemen, seamen, waterside worklers and shipping men were present and many floral tributes were placed on the grave. Rev. A. McNeur conducted a service at St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church and -at the graveside. The casket was covered with the Union Jack and the pallbearers were Messrs A. Farmer, J. Daily, J'. Connell, J. Greggs, D. Gosling and F. Renwick. At the monthly meeting of the Plunket Society, Mrs. Richards was welcomed as a new member. The resignation of Mrs. J. Enright who is leaving the district, was accepted with regret. Arrangements were made for the Society’s annual ball to be held on Boxing Night. The nurse reported that 165 adults and 144 babies had visited the office during the month, also 36 pre-school children. Eighteen new eases and 36 old cases had been visited at their homes.

The Buller Owners' and Breeders’ Association has made arrangements for three matinee trotting meetings to be held before the Christmas meeting of the Trotting Club. The suggested dates are November 18, December 2 and 18. The Association has requested the Trotting Club to consider the inclusion of a local race in its programme.
