WATAROA NOTES

{Our Own Correspondent.j Dairying will soon be again in full swing,_ although the season meantime is decidedly a backward one. There was a crowded gathering here for the anniversary dance held by the Mill Hall Committee, and it proved very enjoyable. The Ross Oo-ehest-ra supplied the music. A “Monte Carlo” was won by Sergeant M. C. Mcßride and Miss Williams (Weheka). Among numerous whitebaiters who have taken up positions on the Soutli Westland rivers are Mr John Heveldt and party-, of Ross, who are located on the Lower Wataroa. However, the constant rough seas and continuous fresh water in the mouths of the rivers appear to have delayed the entry of the fish. A. fine spell of weather may bring good hauls.

The.sale of fat cattle at the Wataroa yards on Friday, 15th. inst., was a successful one, good prices being generally realised. During the week, Mr Friedlander (J'effries and Co., Hokitika), speaking for the Saleyards Committee, explained why repairs to the yards had not previously, been carried out. At the tearooms at the yards hot pies, sandwiches and tea were supplied, and were greatly appreciated, the rooms being in the capable charge of Mrs G. Thompson. Butchers from as fai’ north as Ikamatua were in attendance, and had the entry been larger—it numberd about 300 —there would have still been a good clearance. Among the best prices were £2l 17s 6d a head for 8 steers from Okuru entered by Nolan and Sons; and £l9 17s 6d a head for two trucked lots of Polled Angus cattle from Mr C. L. Gibb.
