CAPTURE GERMANS At Several Centres MAQUIS TAKE ANNECY AND GARRISON. (Rec. 11.40.) LONDON, August 20. The last point of German resistance in the Haute Savoie country, east France, fell to France Forces of tne Interior on Saturday. Organised resistance at Annecy, the chief town in the region, collapsed, and Maquis moved in in strength. The majority of the twelve hundred of the German garrison of Annecy, who had been ordered to resist to the last, were taKen prisoners. Allied ’planes for the whole of Friday night, dropped ammunition and supplies to the Maquis by parachute. FRENCH TAKE CHAMONIX. (Rec. 9.21.) LONDON, August 20. Reports from the French frontier state the German garrison at Chamonix have surrendered to Frencn Forces of the Interior.

It is also reported that fierce fighting is going on at Grenoble, where seventeen thousand partisans, after blocking the alpine road, by destroying three hundred German vehicles, attacked the German garrison, whicn is four thousand strong.

FRENCH MAQUIS.

ATTACK GERMANS NEAR SPAIN

LONDON, August 19. A Reuter report said: Not far from the Spanish frontier, Pau, Mauleon and Orthes, are among the places being attacked by the Maquis, against whom Germans brought in all reinforcements they could spare, including a few aeroplanes, and re-conquered Mauleon. Maquis are occupying good strategic positions. Using light artillery, they almost encircled a German column. Maquis are assisted by reinforcements from the north. They occupied St. Palais and cut German communications with the north-west and west. The Germans maintain communications between Mauleon and Pau, but they are invested from the west, south and east.

AND CONTROL VICHY.

(Rec. 11.40) LONDON, Aug. 20. The Swiss radio says the Maquis have encircled Gronoble, near the Swiss border. Algiers radio says: Frencli Forces of the Interior are in general Control in Vichy, They have there established their own courts. Marshal Petain’s whereabouts is at present unknown. It is staled Vichy leaders intend, if possible, to persuade him to move eastward. It is reported Vich- officials fled to Metz and will go to Germany when the Germans retreat across the Rhine. Metz is only twenty-six miles from the German frontier. A Berlin spokesman has admitted that the Vichy Government is considering the question of removal from Vichy. LAVAL AND COLLEAGUES GO TO BELFORT. (Rec. 10.15) LONDON, Aug. 20. A Reuter correspondent at Zurich, Switzerland quotes usually reliable quarters as stating Laval, Darnand, De Brinon and other Vichyites, accompanied by high German officers, have arrived at Belfort, and that several governments have been organised there. German troops were rigorously suppressing demonstrations in the Belfort area.

VICHY GOVERNMENT’S MOVE. (Rec. 11.10.) LONDON, August 20. The German News Ag&ncy says: A German Foreign Office spokesman announced that, in view of the present events, the Vichy Government was considering transferring to another unspecified locality. It was possible that a move was already under way. The spokeseman added that M. Laval was not in Paris.
