The Coal Commission. Messrs T. Prendeville and J. Hughes paid a visit to the dif.net last Sunday, and met interested parties at Roa Mine, where they went into the question of the trucking contract. Herbie Hogg (Middle East Forces) and at the same time, A.B. Glynn Jones (R.N.Z.N.) was given a'farewell, on the eve of his departure overseas, where he will undergo intensive training. The hall was filled to capacity. The music was in the capable hands of Mrs. J. Bateman, piano; ably assisted by Mr. A. Grindle, cornet; while Mr. J. Bateman made an excellent M.C. Occasion was taken by Mr. Bateman to extend to the two returned men a welcome, and good wishes for their future. He presented each with an envelope of notes. He' also extended the best wishes of all to A.B. Glynn Jones and presented him with an envelope of notes. Eacn of the guests suitably replied. Sgt Herbert Hogg, second son of Mr. and Mrs. C. Hogg, who. has returned from the Middle East, is spending a furlough visit with his parents here. He looks well after his long sojourn in the battle area. On his arrival school children of the higher classes formed a guard of honour and welcomed Sgt. Hogg as he entered tne township. A public meeting- addressed by Mr. A. T. Campbell, M.A., of Christchurch, of the W.E.A. Movement m Canterbury and Westland, was not well attended, whereas his lecture, “The Economics of the War,” showed much study on the part of the lecturer and was much appreciated by the audience. At the close of his lecture he answered questions and explained the formation and functions of a group circle. He was accordea a hearty vote of thanks. While m this district, Mr. Campbell was the guest of Dr. and Mrs. Aylward.
