HOKITIKA NOTES

[Our Own Correspondent!. HOKITIKA, Aug. 17.Mr Kreen (Tatare, South Westland) is on a visit to Hokitika. Mr J. Adamson (South Westland), was a visitor yesterday.

Mr Wilson (Riccarton) is spending a few days here. Mr A. H. Lawn left this week for Christchurch to attend the meeting of the Canterbury Education Board to-morrow. Prior to his departure for Christchurch, Mr R. Frederic (manager of Railway Road Services) was presented by the staff with a handsome gift, with expressions of goodwill from all members. Hokitika senior footballers play Celtic here on Saturday, Mr Olsen being referee, while Ross play Kiwis here, Mr Mitchell being referee. The Mayor, Mr Elcock, occupied the chair at the meeting of the Victory Loan Committee of thirteen, including several ladies, and explained the objects in view. Messrs H. C. Rowe (convenor) and J. W. Mclntyre and Mrs Fraser were appointed a canvassing committee; Messrs M. H. Houston (convenor), Walters and all present a publicity committee; and Mr A. H. L,aw’n (convenor) and county representatives a County committee; Messrs Mitchell, Walters and the convenors an executive committee, to meet the day the loan opens, on September 28 at 7.30 p.m. at the County Chambers. The funeral of the late Mr John Growcott takes place on Friday at 2 p.m. Aged 38, deceased, besides his wife, left two young sons, also his mother, Mrs E. Growcott (Rimu), six sisters, Mesdames O. Wildbore (Rimu), J. Adams (Westport), S. Nikiton (Auckland), L. Morgan (Wellington), A. O’Brien (Hokitika) and A. Crain (Hokitika).
