A collision between a motor velocipede and the rear end of a goods train in the Caversham tunnel, just after mid-day, resulted in the death of a railway signal maintainer, Fhilbert Thomas Smith, aged 45, married with two children. , - j i „ Smith was riding the velocipede behind’ the train and when the train stopped in response to a signal, he was .unable to see it because of smoke in the tunnel. He suffered injuries from which he died before he could be carried to an ambulance.
