WESTPORT. August 16.

Th e Kartigi sailed last night ror Auckland. The Kaimiro is to sail tonight for Auckland. Mr. and Mrs. A. Rae, Rahu, visitors to town over the week-end. Mr and Mrs. L. Johnston, Christchurch, are visiting Westport. Mr. W. H. Williamson has arrived from Christchurch to take up duty m the loco branch of the Railways.

Mrs. W. Cadigan has returned to Kaikoura after, visiting her sister, Mrs. G. Ryan. Best cards in the first competition shoot of the season fired by the Westport Miniature Rifle Cub were: L. Hutchison 70/scr/70; H. V. Palmer 67/2/69; G. Marshall 64/5/69; N. Palmer 63/6/69; T. Norris 63/6/69; K. Coleman 6277/69; Mrs. T. Bryce 57/ 12769; Miss S. Robertson 56/13/69. New coal fields in the Mackley country in the Buller Gorge and a further field at the rear of Heaphy's, also in the Buller Gorge, have been discovered. Rugby Union to appoint a referee for the Seddon Shield fixture on August 26, between Buller and Nelson. Mr. R. B. Wells was appoinw.-d manager of the Buller primary schools’ representative team to compete at the Greymouth tournament next week. Fixtures for Saturday were arranged as follows: Senior (Albion Cup): Rangers v. Combined at Millerton, 2.45 (Mr. H. Cooper); Nga : kawau v. United at Ngakawau, 2.45 (Mr R. Pratt). Junior (Prince Memorial Cup) : Pirates v.. Star. Trotting Track, 2.30 (Mr. J. Burt); Rovers v. Mokihinui, at Granity, 2.30 (Mr. G. Crackett).
