YOUTHS’ CAR CONVERSIONS AUCKLAND, Aug. 14. A series of charges of unlawfully converting motor-cars to their own use was brought against three 18-year-old youths in lhe Police Court to-day. Keith William Barker and Douglas John Stephens were jointly charged with seven offences and Barker alone with two further charges,, while two charges were brought against Frederick Glover. All three pleaded guilty. It was stated that on one occasion two of the youths took a car after attending a church service.

Doctor Alexander Hodge, of the Baptist Tabernacle said he w.as prepared to take an interest in all three youths if they were given a chance. Barker was fined £25, Stephens £2O, and Glover £5, all three being admitted to probation for three years

WITNESS BRIBED WELLINGTON, Aug. 14. James Young, convicted on Friday on a charge of attempting by means of bribe to dissuade Frederick Charles Danby from giving evidence in a criminal case, was sentenced by Judge Smith to six months’ hard labour. The Judge said that Young Ras the master in his relations with Danby. PRISONERS SENTENCED AUCKLAND, Aug. 14. A number of prisoners were sentenced at the Supreme Court this morning. Margaret Campbell (64) for use of an instrument with intent to procure miscarriage was ordered 9 months’ reformative detention. Ravmond Frank Davis (23) for theft of galvanised iron and lead, three years’ probation. Thomas Boyle Dennis (41), and Clifford Dennis Connelly (32), for theft of car parts, four years’ and two years’ reformative detention respectively. Henry Lingman, for assaulting an American sailor, three years’ probation. Wait! Haare for the same offence, twelve months’ hard labour. Clement Robert Awson, for being in possession of unlicensed still, nine months’ imprisonment. Leslie Snow for the same offence, six months’ imprisonment. Thomas Edward Donaldson, for indecent assault, three years’ probation. £9OO IN FINES DUNEDIN, Aug. 14. The New Zealand Fur Co. Ltd., in the Police Court this morning, was fined £lOO on each of four charges of wilfully making false returns of income, and £lOO on each of five charges of making erroneous returns to the Sales Tax Department.

The prosecution said that it was the worst case of the kind to come before New Zealand courts.
