WESTPORT NOTES

The Te Aroha sailed for Little Wanganui yesterday, and the Wingatui arrived from, Wellington. The Kartigi due from Auckland to-day, is to load for a return trip. The Kaimiro is due to-morrow from Auckland. Rev. A. G. Davidson, Assistant-Sup-erintendent of the Christchurch Presbyterian Social Service Association is visiting the district. The death occurred unexpectedly on Saturday of Mr. James Purvis ai! the residence of his daughter, Mrs. J. Bowden. A native of Edinburgh, Scotland, 81 years of age, he had been in New Zealand since his. early days and had followed the sawmilling industry prior to joining the Union Steamship Company for whom he had acted as wharf foreman at Westport and Wellington, until his retirenient some years ago. He was prominent in Masonic circles, having been a foundation member of the KawatiriWestport Lodge, and recently celebrated his 50 years as a Freemason. He is survived by his daughter, Mrs. J. Bowden (Westport) and two sisters in England. The funeral this afternoon, was attended by a large number of the Masonic fraternity and of tne public. When a motor-cycle which he was riding collided with a motor-car at Waimangaroa last evening, Ronga Ropata received injuries which necessitated his removal to the Buller Hospital, and it was found necessary to amputate his left foot. His condition to-day was reported to be serious.
