The Government of Canada, acting under the War Measures Act, has assumed direction of the Montreal Tramways Company. It has ordered the four thousand strikers to return to work to-morrow or to face the conseouences. The Minister of Labour, Mr Mitchell, said the issue of the strike was not sufficiently important to warrant a strike in war time. He stated two Government controllers) will now direct the tram system for sixty days, unless the -union .and the management reach an agreement during ' that period. The company’s officials have promised their full cooperation. The union leaders have ordered the men to report for work after their eleven days’ idleness.
