The funeral of Gary Ashley Cropp; son of Mr. and Mrs. S. Cropp, Greymouth, took place at Karoro Cemetery yesterday afternoon. Rev. E. S. Hoddinott conducted the services.

Mr. R. McMillan, Drilling Superintendent for the Mines Department, left yesterday morning for Wellington en route for the U.S.A., Mr. W. McLellan of the drilling staff, will oe acting-Superifttendent during Mr. McMillan’s absence.

Sgt. E .A. Bastings who resigned his commission in the Ist. Battalion, Waikato Regiment to proceed overseas on service with the 2nd. N.Z.E.F., has received his commission while on service in Italy. He is a member of the Social Security Department.

Owing to illness, the Australian Prime Minister, Mr. Curtin, has cancelled his referendum .campaign meetings in Sydney and Brisbane, states a Sydney cablegram. Mr. Curtin has been confined to bed for an indefinite period, with bronchial influenza. Political quarters regard Mr. Curtin’s illness as a serious threat to the “yes” campaign.

Mr. Percival McCarthy who died re " cently at Christchurch, was a native of Greymouth, being a son of the late Mr. F. McCarthy. He resided for many years in Hokitika and his sudden death was due to an accident. Misses A. and M. McCarthy of Preymouth are sisters of deceased, and Mr. Neil McCarthy, of Cobden, is a brother.
