HOKITIKA NOTES

lOur Own Correspondent!. HOKITIKA, August 14. Dr. C. ;A. Corban, who has been in charge of the South Westland Medical District, will be leaving the district this month. The Department of Health have not yet been able to secure a doctor to replace him. In Hokitika, Dr. Andrea has given notice of his resignation to the Westland Hospital Board as anathetist, and will be leaving probably in September. Dr. Andrea is in private practice here and in Kumara, Ross and surrounding districts.- People are anxious in regard to lack of medical men in the district, as with the departure of two doctors Hokitika, with a population of about 3,000, Kumara, Ross, Koiterangi, Kokatahi, Rimu, Woodstock. Kanieri, Harihari, Wataroa and South Westland would be dependant upon the services of one doctor,. who will have .to deal with 8,000 people, unless another doctor is secured prior to tne departure of Dr. Andrea. Saturday and Sunday were two beautifully fine days in Westland, there was a complete absence of wind, and both days were sunny and warm. During Sunday night one or two light showers of rain fell, but the conditions cleared by morning, and Monday was another fine day. On Saturday and Sunday the banks of the river and creek were lined with fishermen all eager to secure an eany supply of whitebait. No substantial catches are yet reported. Most of the fishermen secured a “feed.” Mr. E. T. Stoop, County Clerk, left this evening on a holiday visit to the East Coast. Many opossum trappers are bringing in skins. They report that in some areas there were plenty, while in others they were scarce, areas appeared to have been trapped out. Trappers are receiving advance payments and handsome cheques should be secured by some parties.
