WESTPORT, August 13. The Rata arrived yesterday from Castlecliff, loaded coal, and sailed for Nelson and Taxakohe this morning. The Te Arona arrived to-day with cargo from Wellington. The Wingatui is due to-morrow from Wellington, to load coal and timber for Wellington. The Borough Council has collected over £2OO of outstanding accounts in the past two weeks, and £438 overdue rates has also been collected. The debit balance in the district fund, which was £11,557 at the end of July 1943, now stands at £5.261, an improvement of £6,296. Westport Borough Council is unanimously in favour of the control of fire services being vested in local bodies, as proposed by the Internal Affairs Department, and United Fire Brigades’ Association. Nurse J. Curtis of Buller Hospital, has passed with honours in surgery in the recent nursing examination. Mr. F. Bonifacio, Reefton, is visiting Westport. Messrs D. Whiting, R. V. Bythell and H. Neighbours of Marlborough, are here on a visit.

Mr. J. Bentley, Kaipoi, is visiting his daughter, Mrs. E. King.

Red Cross parcels fund for war prisoners will benefit by approximately £l5O as a result of a debutantes’ bail here on Friday evening last, arranged by the staff of Gibbs Transport and Motors, Ltd. Seventeen debutantes were presented to the Mayor, Mr. J. M. Robertson. The debutantes were Misses F. Powley, D. Phibbs, M. Williams, J. Miller. B Johnson, J. Wishart, D. Neill, M. Adam. T. Hagan. J. Dellaway, M. Fox, J. Z. Taylor, M. Edge, J. Mann, S. Duncan and B. Lewis.
