YESTERDAY’S GREYMOUTH CASES. Mr G. G. Chisholm, S.M. was on the bench at a sitting of the Magistrate’s Court at Greymouth yesterday morn’ng. Senior Sergeant G. Holt conducted proceedings for the police. James Walter Jamieson, a soldier recently returned from the Pacific, was convicted and fined 10s with 10s costs, when he elected to be dealt with summarily on a charge of using obscene language in Mackay St. at 8.15 p.m. on Saturday. A fine of 10s with 10s costs was imposed on a man who was convicted on a charge of being found on licensed premises, Dunollie Plotel, at 8.50 p.m. on J’une 10. Wong Tim Kew- (Mr W. D Taylor) pleaded guilty to a charge that on or about March 20, 1940, at Wellington. being an alien, he did fail to notify his change of address from Wellington to Greymouth. The Senior Sergeant said that defendant was a Chinaman and had been employed in a laundry at Greymouth for sdme time. He had reg’stered as an alien at Wellington in 1939. He came to Greymouth the following year but did not notify the authorities of the change. A great deal of trouble had been experienced with aliens, particularly Chinese, who, because they were friendly aliens, did not think they were required to notify changes. Mr Taylor admitting the facts, pointed out that defendant could speak English only with difficulty, and probably could not read. He never read newspapers and was not aware of obligations. A fine of 10s with 10s costs was imposed on defendant.
