WESTPORT NOTES

WESTPORT, July 3.

The Totara sailed last night for Tokomarti Bay. The Holmlea arrived last night from Picton, loaded coai, and sailed this morning for New Plymouth. The Kiwitea is expected tonight from. Auckland with general cargo. After discharging she will load coal for Auckland. The Gabriella from Wellington, is scheduled to load coal for Napier on Wednesday. The Kartigi from Portland, with cargo, is due to-morrow. Mr. J. Dowgrav left on Saturday for Wellington. Mr. C. Dixon, Secretary, Nelson Land Sales Committee, Is visiting the Westport district. Miss C. Reedy left on Saturday for Christchurch, where she is to undergo medical treatment. Mrs. C. Walsh left this afternoon for Dunedin.

The death occurred suddenly at his residence, Russell Street, yesterday evening, of Mr. Albert Alexander Hay-Mackenzie, at the age of 63 'years. Mr. ’ Hay-Mackenzie was born at Dunedin and had resided over forty years in Westport, where his late father, Mr. T. Hay-Mackenzie was stationed for a time as Traffic Manager to the Railways Department. In his younger days the late Mr. HayMackenzie, “Bert,” as he was more commonlv called, was a keen footballer and cricketer, having represented Buller at both codes. He was also keenly interested in racing and light harness horses and had assisted in the education of many of the young stock in the district. Jn later years, with failing health, he took up the game of bowls and was a member of the Westport Bowling Club. Besides his wife he leaves four sons, Sergeant Ron Hay-Mackenzie (prisoner of war in Germany), Henry, (N.N.Z.A.F., England), Alexander (Merchant Navy, overseas) and John (Westport), ana four daughters, Mrs. J. Lorimer (Milton), Sister C. Hay-Mackenzie (formerly on the nursing staff at the Grey River Hospital and now serving in the 3rd. General Hospital in Italy), Flora and Lucie Hay-Mackenzie (Westport; also a sister, Miss L. Hay-Mackenzie (Hawera), and one brother, Mr. Scobie Hay-Mackenzie (Wellington). The funeral will take place to-morrow afternoon.

The Marine Department’s bucketdredge recommenced dredging operations on the Buller River yesterday, in the vicinity of the merchandise wharf after several months’ idleness.

Rugby football results at Westport over the week-end were: Senior: grade: Ngakawau 12, Combined 5. The United-Ranger game was postponed, and will be played at a later date in Westport. Junior: Star 3, Rovers 0; Mokihinui 15, Old Boys 3. Third grade: Star 12, Rovers 0; Pirates won by default from Technical.

Recent basketball results are: First section: Rangers A v. Granity, 15 all; Tech. A 14, Kawatiri 11; Tech. O.G. A 11, Waimangaroa 10. Second section: Denniston and Torea A, 14 all; Torea A 10, Tech. O.G. B 7; St. Mary's A 18, Granitv B 10; Hospital defaulted to Tech. B. Because of transport difficulty, the Kiwi and Tui games at Denniston were not played. The first round in the first section has finished, and Waimangaroa, which entered the competitions only last year, ar e the new holders of the Dunn Cup. Waimangaroa won five of the six games played and had ten points, and Tecnnical 0.G., with four wins and a draw in seven games, were runners-up with -iiine points. Technical and Rangers each had eight points, and were followed bv Granity 7, Kiwi 5, Denniston O.G. 2, and kawatiri 1. In the second section, Torea A are the winners, wijth six wins and a draw. In Stableford match played at the Kawatiri golf links on Saturday afternoon, the best cards were: N. Nottle 33, E. Fair 32, H. Greenwood 31, A .Pain 29, C. F. Schadick 28, C. Petersen 28. R. Davies 27. R. Macklow 27, J. Woodward 26. In the final of the Jubilee Cup yesterday, C. Peterson and T. Broker finished all square. In the replay, Broker won, 4 and 3. The 12-hole medal aggregate patriotic match, played yesterday afternoon was won by E. Fair and Mrs. Hewitt, with 98 nett. The next best card was returned by N. Nottle and Miss J. Marr, with 100 nett.
