NORTH AUSTRALIA
Land of Promise
(Rec. 9.20)
SYDNEY, July 3.
“Australia’s Northern ' Territory could be built into an empire,” said Mr. Nelson T. Johnson, American Minister to the Commonwealth, after a ten-day inspection of the area. “But this could be achieved only if the Government embarked on a definite plan to .open up the land to primary producers.” He advocated a considerable development of rail transport in the area. “If the Government provided chances for young men and women in the Northern Territory, great cities would grow up within forty or fifty years,” said Mr. Johnson. “No country in the world offers greater opportunities for young people than the Northern Territory.”
