POWER SCHEME, z F.A. AUCUKLAND, July 1. The Bav of Islands Power Board has decided to send a deputation to the Minister of Works (Hon. R. Semple) seeking permission to develop a hydro-electric scheme at Lake Omapere. The consulting engineer to the board (Mr. Mandeno) estimated that the cost of raising the level of the 3,000-acre lake, providing a fall of 600 feet into the Utukura Valley, and building two power stations, at £196,000. The power generated would suffice for the present needs of the bay area, together with reticulation to Hokianga and Whangaroa counties, and pro-'da? n surplus for assisting the rest of the North Island in an emergency. The estimated production costs of local generation were .19d., against the Works Department’s average price of .32d..
