SHIPS IN DARDANELLES

MR. EDEN’S SATISFACTION. 8.0.W. RUGBY, June 21

In the Commons, Mr. Eden expressed British satisfaction at the Turkish decision to prevent the passage .of German naval ships through the Dardanelles. Replying to a question, he said: “The Turkish Government has given orders that the passage of all K.T. and E.M.S. vessels through the Straits be refused in future. Further, all German merchant vessels which arrive at the Straits will henceforth be carefully examined to make sure they are merchant vessels. Assurances to this effect were given to the British Ambassador at Ankara and published in an official Turkish communique. The Government wishes to express satisfaction for this action by the Turkish Government.” K.T. boats are armed merchant vessels of about 800 tons. E.M.S boats are armed barges of about 50 tons.
