MEAT GRADING

The following letter has been received in relation to our recent article stressing the need for the grading of meat throughout the Dominion. The Secretary, Editorial Board, Magazine Page, “Grey River Argus.” Dear Sir, I have been interested to read your article on meat grading appearing on the “Magazine Page” of your issue of 6th April, 1944, in which you properly stress the importance of this principle as a means of making price control effective. Referring, however, to the statement contained in the article that the responsible Minister continues to decline to extend the system to other districts, may I point out that this is a matter for determination by Cabinet and not by myself, as responsible Minister. I placed the matter before. Cabinet when meat rationing was being considered and at ■ that stage it was decided to defer the introduction of grading generally pending the operation of grading, in the Wellington District being observed for a period. | Observations on the Wellington

position will be submitted to Cabinet as soon as the necessary information is available when representations from your Board and other organisations will also be considered. Yours sincerely, D. G. SULLIVAN.
