HOKITIKA NOTES

(Our Own Correspondent]. HOKITIKA, May 18. At the Borough Council meeting last Tuesday, Mr. A. R. Elcock was sworn in as Mayor following his reelection. The Deputy-Mayor, Mr. C. Caliari, said he would like to take the opportunity of expressing to Mr. Elcock the heartiest congratulations of the Councillors on his re-election unopposed. It was a high tribute from the citizens and a sign that they wel’e entirely satisfied with his administration. With the people the members of the Council heartily agreed. He expressed the wish that the town and district would prosper under his guidance and care. Crs W. H. Stopforth, T. W. Duff, L. Ross, S. Havill, J. K. Aitken and E. Heenan also extended their congratulations. Apologies were received from G. Heinz and D. P. Stuart. Cr. Stuart, is at present a patient in Westland Hospital. The Mayor thanked the members for their congratulations. During his term the Council had not set the Thames on fire, nevertheless it had carried out much useful work, and he felt certain that the people of Hokitika would recognise the efforts of the Council during the past term. He paid a tribute to the retiring members, Councillors. G. Heinz (who had served the town for over 20 years) and J. K. Aitken. Cr.' Stuart forwarded a letter expressing thanks to the Council members for their good wishes, and -asking that the Council recommend the incoming Council to go ahead with the building of new Municipal Chambers, and to provide a new main for the water supply from the lake to the town reservoir. The Council decided to place the recommendations before the incoming Co cil. It was decided to take no action in regard to a request to instal new weighing machines at the abattoirs Abattoir fees for the month totalled £B6 19s Hd On the motion of Cr. Havill it was decided tq proceed immediately with the sinking of a well at the pumping plant, with cylindrical concrete pipes, the bottom dip to pipes to be drilled with 2-inch holes, the work to be supervised by Mr. S. Havill, and to be carried out bv Mr. J. Krakowsky. The Health Officer reported that a sample of water from the reservoir was satisfactory. The Beautifying Societv was granted permission to plant 44 flowering cherry trees in Sale Street, between Gibson Quay and Stafford Street.
