ILLEGAL SALE OF PETROL.
P.A. WELLINGTON, May 18. Walter Roscoe Holder was convicted yesterday at Lower Hutt by the Magistrate (Mr. Harley) of selling 888 i gallons of petrol not in terms’ of his permit. Counsel stated that defendant was merely manager and had nothing to gain. He had been extremely busy, and his records got into considerable muddlement. The amount appeared large, but it was only four per cent, of the turnover for the period in question, and might easily be ac-> counted for by losing a bundle of coupons or neglect to enter the amounts. The Magistrate said the matter was not one to be lightly dealt with, and he imposed one month’s imprisonment. ALLEGED APPROACH TO JURY. P.A. WELLINGTON,-May 17. At the conclusion of the tr'al in the Supreme Court of Jack Barrett, a labourer, aged 64, on charges of attempting to pervert the course of justice bv approaching members of a jury panel, the jurv found him not guilty on three counts, and announced that they were unable to agree on the other two. The accused is to be tried next Monday on the two counts on which there has been no decision.
