Soundings taken on the Grey bar yesterday afternoon bv the Harbourmaster (Captain H. Moar) show that the low-water depth is still 13 feet. At high tide last evening the depth was 22 feet 3 inches;

For some time a work-train has been working in the Macklev ballast pit near Tiroroa, in the Buller Gorge, but owing to a breakdown in the digging machine the work will be held up during the next week or so.

Severe injuries to his right foot were received by a miner, James Phillips, of -Taylorville, yesterday morning, when, as a result 01 a jig prop in his place at the Wallsend mine Pullins' out, a full box of coal ran over his foot. After he had been given first aid and attended to bv Dr K Kent, at the mine mouth, he was conveyed to the Grev Jiiver Hospital, where, last evening, his. condition was reported to be satisfactory.

Mr. H C. D. Somerset, Director of the Feilding Communitv Centre, will speak on community centres in the Druids’ Hall, Runanga, to-night, and to-morrow, at 12.30, he will address a meeting in the Greymouth Borough Council Chambers. A visit to Hokitika is also included in his West Coast, itinerary. Mr. Somerset is an authority on the running of community centres and was recently in Christchurch and other parts of Canterbury advising groups interested in the establishment of centres.

The s.s. Rata arrived at 5 p.m. yesterday and is expected to sail on this morning’s tide with coal for Nelson. The s.s. Titoki sailed yesterdav morning with coal for New Plymouth. The s.s. Kartigi sailed at 6.30 o’clock last evening with coal for the North Island. The s.s. Holmlea is due today to load coal for Wanganui. The s.s. Gabriella is expected late to-night to load coal and timber for Wellington. The s.s. Kaimiro is expected this morning to load coal for Wellington.

Last week, national war savings returns for the Grey district showed a decline, £703 2s 6d being invested, a deficiency of £355 17s 6d. Hokitika and Kumara, obtained their quota. The greatest deficiency was at Greymouth. B v use of accumulations from previous weeks, the district was returned as having achieved its quota, and by the same means Blackball, Greymouth, Brunnerton, Otira, Reefton and Waiuta were successful.
