GREY HARBOUR BOARD

MONTHLY MEETING. Mr. J. B. Kent presided over the monthly meeting of the Greymoucn Harbour Board held on Wednesday evening. Those present were Mr. F. Williams Hon. J. Ryall, M.L.C., Messrs W. E. Pring, J. Mulcare, W. Clayton, E. W. Heenan, J. A. Murdoch, J Smeaton, the Secretary (Mr. W. B. Gilbert) anu the Engineer (Mr. D. S. Kennedy). The Minister of Marine (Hon. Jas. O’Brien) wrote forwarding plans, etc., of suggested harbour improvement scheme by Mr. J. E. Gardner, Gisborne.—Referred to the Engineer. T’he Secretary, Marine Department, wrote vesting an area of reclaimed land, adjoining the tidal lagoon. Greymouth, in the Board, and enquiring regarding reclamation oi same.—The Secretary reported that the information had been supplied. The District Engineer, Public Works Department, Greymouth, wrote, asking to be supplied with u copy of conditions of lease of stacking area, Part Reserve 82, and Part Section 472, Greymouth..—The Secretary said that the information had been supplied. The District Engineer, Public Works Department, Greymouth wrote accepting conditions of hire of seventon crane. In reply to an enquiry for the services of a launch for air-sea rescue work, it was decided to reply that any application would always receive tne most sympathetic consideration, tne chairman being given power to act n« the matter.

The Secretary, Waterfront Control Commission, Wellington, wrote regarding the erection of a watersiders’ waiting room, enquiring if there was any likelihood in the next few' years of wharves being built, elsewhere, which would mean that the waiting room in the proposed situation would be unsatisfactory. Members considered that it was impossible in the meantime to give a satisfactory reply, and the mattei Was referred to the incoming Board.

The Commission also wrote regarding the renting of the waterman’s office at the corner of the Watersiders’ Hall for accommodation of the Comrepresentatives and timekeepers. The recommendation of the Engineer, that the room be let at a rental of 10s a week, was adopted. The Secretary, Harbour Board’s Association of New Zealand, wrote forwarding a solicitor’s opinion regarding the power of a Harbour Board to compromise actions brought for damages for negligence committed by it or its servants.

The Mayor of Greymouth (Mr. F. A. Kitchingham) wrote calling a public meeting for Tuesday, May 16, at 8 o.m. at the Lyceum Hall, for the purpose of forming a Progress League. It was decided that the chairman should represent the Board at the meeting, Mr. Mulcare remarking that it was a reflection on Greymouth that it had not had a Progress League previously. In reply to an enquiry for Kauri timber for the construction of a row boat for the Harbour staff, C. and A. Odlin, Timber Co. Ltd., wrote advising that no supplies were available. Mr. S. Compton wrote resigning his position as leading hand on the dredge. The resignation was accepted, and it was decided to send a letter expressing appreciation of Mr. Compton’s services to the Board, Consent was given to transfers: Section 1, Eight Mile, WU-, Ham Garnett to Mrs. J. Hambley; rt. Sect. 5 D.P. 415„ Res. 1485, Blaketown A. W. Hancock to Mrs. M. E. Wilae; Sects. 171 and 172, Packer’s Quay, Blaketown, P. J. McEnaney to A. R. B Quarterman. It was decided to complete trio lease of Sections 49 to 53, Dobson, to Frederick H. Johansen. In reply to an application bv a member of the staff for accumulated leave for the period he had spent m the Armed Forces, it was decided to state that the resolution of the Board on the matter had referred only to men serving overseas . The Engineer was author.sed to spend £2OO on the purchase of terials for repairs to the office building. the workshoo and storeroom, and possibly to the Watersiders’ Hall. The Treasury Department wrote remitting wharfages £359 .Is 5d and rents and royalties. £478 Is 3d. The Finance Committee reported that accounts received since the last meeting had totalled £1,182 5s 3d, made up as follows:—Shipping dues

£275 14s 7d; Royalties £478 Is' 3a; Rents £6l 15s: Hire and sale of plant , £5 13s; Wharfages £359 Is sd; Miscellaneous £2. The Harbour Fund had a debit balance of £5,'656 Ils 2d. ] The payment of accounts amounting to £1,923 8s 6d was recommended. The report was adopted,
