DENNISTON NOTES

IDur Own Correspondent.] Mr. D. Caldwell, R.N.Z.A.F., is visiting his home at Denniston. Mr. L. Harrison is at present an inmate .of the Buller Hospital. Aftei’ a period in the local hospital, Mrs. McFadzean has been removed to the Buller Hospital for further treattment.

Mr. W. A. Cooper. R.N.Z.A.F., has returned to his station after spending sick leave with his parents Mr. and Mrs. W. G. Cooper, Denniston. Mr. H. Slaven, R.N.Z.A.F., is spending his loave here Mr. N. Shand has returned after spending holidays at Dunedin. Mr. A. Wishart has returned after his annual holidays. . . Mrs. J. Findlay who has been visiting Nelson has returned. Miss B. Allen, Wellington, has left on return, after spending holidays with her parents Mr. and Mrs. J. Allen, Denniston. A highly successful Plunket ball was held in the local hall on Friday, last week. There was a large attendance. Music was supplied by Messrs W. Garing (piano), and J. Rodgers on the drums, while Messrs G. Cummings and W. Hewitson actedas M.’sC. Supper was supplied and served by the Ladies’ Committee. A Miners’ Union meeting was held in the Burnett’s Face hall on Thursday night, Mr. H. Baird presiding over a large attendance. Correspondence dealing with a request to work on May Day was dealt with, it being decided by votes to observe May Day as a holiday. Mr. W. Meek delivered ; a report from the Central Committee, it being received as satisfactory. It 'was decided to increase the capita-' jtion by 6d per member to the Central 'Committee. Other matters of minor importance were dealt with before the meeting closed. A public meeting was held .in the local picture hall on Sunday after- | noon, when a deputation from Ru- i nanga delivered an address on the establishment of a co-operative store. | The deputation consisted of Messrs T. , :Bowes (manager). J. Oakley (presi- I 'dent), McTaggart and McTigue (com- | mittee men). Mr. Oakley spoke on the successful management of a co- | operative store. He saw no reason I i why a co-operative store, started on Denniston, should not prove to be a success. These remarks . were endorsed by the .other members of the deputation.
