ELECTRIC POWER

NEED FOR ECONOMY STRESSED. P.A. WELLINGTON, April 28. A joint statement by Mr. Sullivanand the Minister' of Works (Mr. R. Semple) emphasises that the need for economy in the use of electricity in the North Island still exists, and they appeal to all consumers in the North Island to conserve electricity where ever possible, during the winter months particularly. The Ministers said every effort was being made to increase generating plant capacity as quickly as possible, but owing to adverse circumstances affecting this work progress had been retarded. However, one new 20,000 k.w. unit had been placed in service at Piripaua power station, which made it possible for a small increase in the amount of power to be made available for last year. This estimated amount of power available, was though, conditional on adequate supplies of coal being forthcoming, hydraulic conditions being normal, and no serious breakdown in plant being experienced.
