Racing and Trotting Getting On. Latest Song, winner of the second division of the Army Trial Handicap at Invercargill, did not make her debut till she was a 4-year-old, an f ] it was not till J'anuary last that she registered her first placing running third at Vincent. Now a six-year-old, it is remarkable that her owner has not bred from her in that her sire, Song Bird (by Kilbroney) was a grand sprinter in his day, and the dam Pax, was an All Red mare, Incidentally, as a three-year-old Song Bird won eight races, and included in his successes were the Wellington Summer Handicap, 1 mile, the C.J.C Craven Plate and Great Easter Handicap and the Dunedin J.C. Publicans’ Handicap. Likely To Retire. Hopes that Foxiana would stand up to a preparation have vanished, and it is unlikely that Mr. Collinson will have him trained again. Foxiana, by Hunting Song from Maftulla, by Martian was bred by his owner, trained throughout his career by L. Morris and ridden in most of his races by D. W. Redstone. He herd done a good deal of hunting before he commenced racing as a four-year-old, in which season he had two runs on the flat. Next season, as a five-year-old, he won three hurdle races at New Plymouth, Bulls and Marton before winning a maiden on the flat at a Wanganui meeting. ' Later he won the Century Hurdles and Rangitara Hurdle. His next season was his best. He won the Wanganui, Wellington, July, and Grand National Steeplechases, and finished second in the Grand National Hurdles and the Manawatu and Waverley Steeplechases, winning that season £3,405 in stakes. Foxiana was one of the best of the moderns, not so dashing as Clarion Call, which was trained in the same stable and played the role of schooling master to Foxiana and his brothers Old Surrey and Hunting Lore, but he was extremely efficient and reliable and did not have a fall recorded against him in any jumping race he contested. Possibilities. Although his only success of the current term came over six furlongs, Constitution was accorded an outing in the Great Northern Derby, but was well back throughout. However, the fact that he is by Lang Bian from the Romeo mare Lady Bertha, dam previously of the useful Our Jean, encouraged his owner to give Constitution another test in the Tauranga Cup and his second to Air Port, beaten half a length, was most promising. Disappointed. When he first appeared on the turf Mr Valiant created an impression by .reason of his commanding physique, and although it was not expected that he would come to- hand early he won at his third outing. He has done a lot of travelling and racing since without any material reward, but his second at Hastings suggests that he, is on the up-grade. Delayed. „ , ' Ga v F'alcon, winner of the Foukawa Maiden at Hastings, travelled a long way before getting on the winning list, although she was placed on sveral occasions. By Bulandshar she is the first of the progeny of the Arausio mare Maine, the dam being a half-sister to Anomaly, Snatcher, King’s Folly, Shirley, etc., and she is thus bred on sound lines. A Cheap Horse. . ~ Gulf Stream, an easy winner of the Kinloch Handicap at Riccarton on March 4 may prove a bargain for his Wellington owner Mr. G. A. La'ng, who bought him as a yearling at Trentham for 285 gs. When trained as a two-year-old by V. E. Bryant at Foxton last season, the Tiderace—April Fool gelding won £l9O. He was later transferred to the Riccarton stable of C. G. Humphries and made a promising start this season by, winning the Wanganui Guineas. It was unfortunate that Gulf Stream started to get down on his heels while galloping and he was eased up just be- , fore the New Zealand Cup meeting. Though not ready to give of his best, Gulf Stream was taken to the Wellington Cup meeting and racing i there did him good. In the Kinloch j Handicap-, he was soon in front and galloped on freely to the end. j With his winnings at £715 Gulf Stream has done well as he has been lightly rated. He is a half-brother to Beaupartir and Lambourn, well-perfor-med horses. ‘
