CORRESPONDENCE

LATVIA AND SOVIET.

(To The Editor) Sir, —I wish to make reference to a letter which appeared in a recent issue of your paper on the subject of Latvia and the Soviet. This letter was written by a person who is too modest to divulge his own name, but signs hmself Paul Revere. Nor is this the first letter which has appeared in your columns slandering the Soviet Union and signed with this name. Paul Revere asserts that ‘'Mr. D Mcßae is conscious that his efforts to make capital out of the fact that Russia is now fighting on the side of the Allies are hampered by certain historc events.” He would have put the position more correctly if he had said that Mr. Mcßae’s efforts to see that; the truth is told about the Soviet Union are hampered by individuals like Paul Revere who.devote then’ iives to the distortion and falsification of history as far as the Soviet Union is. concerned; and ’who are so blinded bv prejudice that they are incapable of either generosity or candour on this subject. It is not my intention to indulge in a critique of the mass of historical distortions contained in your correspondent’s letter. I have already done this elsewhere. I would, however, comment upon one statement of his which is on a par with the rest. He asserts , that the Soviet Union, prior to Geripiany’s attack upon her, was “collaborating ihost faithfully with Hitler.” This is an infamous lie, and persons who utter this lie are either contemptible slanderers or polr-iCal ignoramuses. I will give Paul Revere the benefit of the doubt, and put him in the latter category. Everybody who knows anything on the matter knows, that the Soviet Unions relic?tions with Germany were relations oi. neutrality and non-aggression—the sort of relations exactly as exist at the present time between ‘-‘he Soviet Union and Japan. Would Paul Revere suggest that the Soviet Union is, by reason of the present pact of neutrality, guilty of “collaborating most faithfully” with Japan ? In conclusion may I remark that any statements I make in the press are made over my own name., if n is worth while having any opinion on anything, it is worth while voicing u openly and honestly without ’ ing behind a nom-de-plume. Eveiybodv knows what mv opinions apd activities are, and I suggest that it Paul Revere were to display the same he would merit greater respect. lam etc., G McRA E.
