Seddon, Messrs H. W. Washer (Wellington), J. E. Broadfoot (Auckland), H. L. Lamar (Gisborne), C. D. McGarry, W. J. Dwear (Christchurch). The appointment of Mr. F. W. Aickin, 0.8. E., as staff superintendent and chief legal adviser of New Zealand Government Railways was announced yesterday by the Minister of Railways, states a Press Association message from Wellington. - The appointment as the head, of the British Service Mission to Moscow of Lieutenant-General Montague Brocas Burrows, has been announced in London. General Burrows was appointed in 1938 Military Attache to Rome when relations with Italy were strained. He has since been training tank units destined to take part in the invasion of Europe.

Many friends in Greymouth and Runanga will learn with regret of the death of Mr. T. R. Hatchard, who until two years ago was a member of the local staff of the State Mmes Department fox- a period of five vears, first at Runanga and then at Greymouth. Two years ago he wa's transferred to take charge of the State Mines Office in the Ohoura district, Eastern Taranaki, where his death occurred .on Wednesday morning as the result of a motor accident. With two other- Departmental officials he was travelling three-quarters of a mile south of Ohoura when the car went over- a bank, he being killed, while the others escaped with slight injuries. About 34 years of age the late Mr. Hatchard was a native of Christchurch, and leaves a wife and family of three children. He was a popular personality and recognised as a man of marked ability.

Many friends on the West Coast and in the Buller district will regret to learn of the death of Mrs. Rose Auld which occurred recently, at hex- residence 494 Worcester- Street, Linwood, Christchurch. Born at Christchurch, the late Mrs. Auld was the second daughter- of the late Mr and Mrs. W. Neighbours early residents of Christchurch where they pioneered the brickmaking industry. She spent her early youth in Christchurch from where with her parents and the members of her family, she moved to Waimangaroa where her father and brothers started the brickworks there. She married Mr. Charles Auld, manager of R. T. Watson’s Timber- Yard, Ngakawau and lived there fox- twenty years, during which time she endeared herself to all by kindly disposition and charitable nature. She returned with her husband to Christchurch 14 years ago and lived there until the time of hex- death. To her bereaved husband and daughter, Mrs. P. E. Knowles of Christchurch, is extended the heartfelt sympathy of a wide circle of friends and also her sister, Mrs. G. Sowerby (New Plymouth) and brothers Leonard and Arthur (Upper Hutt), John (Waimangaroa) and Thomas (Mokau, Taranaki).

The following appointments and promotions of . officers of the New Zealand Military F'orces have been Gazetted: Temporary' Lieut-Colonel R. D. McFarlane of the Waikato Regiment relinquishes command of a battalion and is posted to the reserve of officers; Colonel N. L. Macky; relinquishes the appointment of Fortress Commander, Bay of Islands, and is posted to the reserve of officers; Colonel W. Murphy, Second N.Z.E.F., is attached to Army Headquarters for duty as Liaison Officer, Third Division; Temporary Colonel C. V. Ciochetto ceases to be seconded for service with the National Service Department and 5s posted to the reserve of officers; Temporary Lieut.-Colonel H. S. Jones, New Zealand Artillery, relinquishes command of a field regiment and is posted to the reserve .of officers; Colonel W. W. Doye, Second. N.Z.E.F. in the Pacific, is to be Brigadier: Colonel J. M. Twhigg, New Zealand Medical Corps, is tp be Brigadier; Lieut.-Colonel S'. L.
