Messrs L. Drew and G. Anness of Fiji, have commenced work at the Greymouth Telegraph Office for special technical training as telephone mechanicians.

Miss Naomi Griffiths was appointed assistant junior librarian at the Greymouth Municipal Library at last evening’s meeting of the Greymouth Borough Council.

The County Scout Commissioner, Mr. W. A. Smith, of Westport, was farewelled’ by members of Buller anj Westlann Scout units on Wed- < nesday evening, when he was presented with a scout stick of local lancew'ood, mounted with West Coast gold, a piece of Denniston coal, a paua shell tiki, and a miniature greenstone mere. Opportunity was taken to welcome Mr. Smith’s successor, Mr. W. Sutherland of ' Greymouth.

Among the returned servicemen at the civic reception on Wednesday evening in Greymouth, Staff Sergeant Merv. Curtis, was given an ovation when it was pionted out that he wore the ribbon of the Military Medal as well as of the Africa Star. The Mayor, Mr. F. A. Kitchingham, rea.q out his citation, dealing with events leading; up to the award of the medal, which was for conspicuous gallantry at.Maleme aerodrome, in Crete, when Sergeant Curtis threw away his machine-gun and Taeen across open ground to rescue the pilot of a burning ’plane. All that time he was under continuous heavy fire from the enemy.

Mr. J. Dash M.A., principal of the Hawera Technical High School, has been appointed principal of the Wanganui Technical College to succeed Mr. I. E. Newton, M.A.. wl)i is retiring from the teaching; profession after more than forty years’ service. There were twenty-four applicants. Mr. Dash graduated from the Victoria University and ihas had thirty years teaching and school administrative experience. He is a former house master of Nelson College and Waitaki Boys’ Hight School and assistant at the Palmerston North Boys’ High School. He has been in charge of the Hawera Technical High School for the last eleven years.

The death occurred at the Grey River Hospital yesterday morning of John Nowlev Mosle-"- of Greymouth. Deceased who was in his 87th* year, was born in Newcastle-on-Tyne, England and came to Brunnerton in the year 1887. He has resided in Greymouth for the past 40 years. The late Mr. Mosely who was prettCeffsed by his wife just over two years ago, is survived by five sons, William and Alex (Grevmoutih). Harry (Barrytown), Thomas (Dunedirr), and Edward. (Temuka): and four daughters, Mesdames Tomline and J. Owen (Christchurch). W. Pring (Greymouth) and J. Dingle (Hawera.) The funeral will be a private one.

Rev. F. G. Brittan, one of the last of the pioneers of Canterbury, who .arrived at Lyttelton with his family in the Sir George Seymour, one of the First Four Ships, will celebrate his ninety-sixth iffirthflay to-morrow. Members of the ‘Canterbury Pilgdims’ and Early Settlers’ Association, of which Mr. Brittan has been a vice-president since its foundation, will visit him and extend congratulations. The son of Mr. William Guise Brittan, who took a leading part in the foundation of the Canterbury Association, Mr. Brittan was born at Sherbourne, Dorsetshire, England in 1848 After attending Christ's College, Mr. Brittan went to England and took a m.aste" of arts degree at Queen’s College, Oxford. He was ordained bv Bishop Harper, and from 1871 to 1873 was curate at Addington. For the next nine years he was vicar .at Papanui, and after several periods on the staff of Christ’s College, retired in 1®22.

T'he funeral service of the late Miss Jane Winstone, of Wanganui, a member of the Air Transport Auxiliary was held in the Catholic Church of St. J'ohn, Maidenhead, Berkshire, states a special Press Association telegram from London. She was buried in All Saints’ Cemetery, Maidenhead. There was a large number of wreaths, with many from the Air Transport Auxiliary. Mr. J'ordan was represented by Lieutenant W. A. Goss. N.Z.E.F., Christchurch. Others present were Misses Trevor Hunter (Wanganui) and Betty Black (Wellington), and First Officer Patrick Blundell (Wellington), all members of the A.T.A.; also Majoi’ H. D. Robertson (Wanganui), and the fallowing members of the R.N.Z.N.V.R.: Lieutenants T. JBourke (Wellington).. W. H. Goss (Dunedin), Flight Lieutenant R. D. Kearns, D.F.C., D.F.M. (Reefton), Flight Lieutenant V. Howarth. R-A-A.F.. Sergeant F. J. Whitehead. N.Z.E.F. (Dunedin). Members or the A.T.A. were pall-bearers.
