Mr J. M. A. Hott, of Wellington, has been elected one of the five directors for the outside world of Rotary International, states a Press Association message. Mr Hott was president of the Wellington Rotary Club in 1929-30. and District Governor for New Zealand and Fiji. .in 1934. Acceptance of this position will necessitate his leaving for the United States in the near future.

A Washington cable states: President Roosevelt continues to take it easy, on the advice of his physician, following his recent illness. He did not go to the executive offices on Friday. He cancelled the weekly Cabinet meeting. Secretary Early said the President probably will restrict his activities for some time in order to recover fully from his illness.

Miss Doreen Thomson, the eldest daughter of Mr and Mrs J. W. Thomson. Shakespeare Street, Greymouth, died ..at Hamilton on Friday. She was aged 26. Miss Thomson was a nurse by profession and after receiving her training at Greymouth nursed at the Napier. Waipawa and Waikato Hospitals. Besides her parents she leaves one sister, Mrs •W. Manning (Greymouth) and one brother. Jtohn (N.Z.E.F., Middle East). The funeral will take place at Grey mouth

Miss Elizabeth Huntingdon (Victoria University College, Wellington) has been awarded the British Council War-time Scholarship for 1943. Miss Huntingdon is expected to leave for England early this year. The Senate of the University of New Zealand has decided to forward the final nominations for the 1944 scholarship, the names being in alphabetical order: Miss Kathleen Alison (Auckland), Miss Annie Kathleen Caughley (Victoria, Wellington), Miss Oenone Marguerite Greig (Victoria University, Wellington), Miss Helen Marion Sheida Thomson (Otago). The scholarship is awarded by the British Council for women graduated from overseas Dominions.

Rev. Arthur Ashcroft., a former president of the New Zealand Methodist Conference, died at Palmerston North recently, aged 74. He was born in Lancashire and came to New Zealand in 1884, settling at Napier. Six vears later he was accepted by the Methodist Church as a home missionary and later entered the ministry. He held church appointments at Waitara. Paparoa ("North Auckland). Woodend, Tai Tapu, Christchurch, Greymouth, Nelson. Palmerston North, Thames, Auckland. Oamaru and Oxford. Mr. Ashcroft was assistant editor of the connexional paper in 1912, was a member of the board of examiners for five years, and was assistant secretary of the conference for five years. He was secretary from 1920 until 1924. when he was appointed president. Besides his wife he leaves one son and two daughters.
