Miss M. Macßae, of Christchurch, is holidaying In Greymouth. Pte. C. Dittman, of Christchurch, is on a visit to Greymouth. Mrs W. E. James returned yesterday from Invercargill. Mrs F. H. Steel, junr., who has been on a holiday visit to Runanga, returns to-day to Christchurch. Able Seaman C. B. Atkinson and O. Dwan of Hokitika leave this morning on return to their station. Mr. and Mrs. P. Wafer, Barrytown, have been.’ advised that their son Jack has been trans*rred from Italy to Germany, their i.ov Noel having been transferred there a few months ago. Guests at Revington’s Hotel include: Archdeacon L. G. Whitehead (Dunedin), Colonel G. Lyons, Capt. M. Hastings. Major F. M. Price, Miss E. M. West, Miss M. H. Luff (Wellington). Hon. J. O’Brien, Minister of Marine and Transport, and Acting-Min-ister of Mines and Labour, will pay a visit to Westland, and .will meet the members of the Hokitika Harbour Board, in order to discuss the conditions of the port there. Mr F. W. Furkert, former Chief Engineer of Public Works, who,is a native of Ross, will to-day pay a visit to Westland. During his stay at Hokitika Mr Furkert, will make an inspection of the harbour, his advice! having been sought on that subject by the Minister of Marine, Hon. J. O’Brien. The Union Steamship Company announces several staff appointments. Messrs A. N. Leslie, chief assistant to the management, and H. H. Dobbie, branch manager at Christchurch, are to be joint assistant-managers at Head Office. Mr. P. L. Hodge, branch manager at Invercargill, is to be branch manager at Christchurch. Mr. L. L. Derbidge, sub-manager at Lyttelton, is to be branch manager at 'invercargill. Mr. H. G. Edwards chief clerk at Napier, Js to be submanager at Lyttelton. It was announced yesterday at Wellington, by Mr. Raymond E. Cox, First to the United States Legation in New Zealand, that Mr. William Carter Burdett, Envoy Extraordinary, and Minister Plenipotentiary of the United States in New Zealand, died yesterday morning. The late Mr. Burdett' entered a nursing home shortly after his arrival in Wellington two or three months ago. Hon. D. G. Sullivan (Acting Prime Minister) stated: “Both my colleagues and myself were grieved to learn of the untimely death of Mr. Burdett, who so recently took up office as United States Minister to New Zealand. Mr.' Burdett was not in the best of health when he arrived in New Zealand, and it was a great disappointment to our hopes that nis health did not recover, and that his mission, v/hich promised such useful results for both our countries, has been so suddenly terminated. I extend the sincere sympathy of the Government and people of New Zealand to Mrs. Burdett and her family, to the Government of the United States, and to officers of the United States Legation in Wellington.'’ — Press Assn.
