STOCKTON NOTES

[Our Own Correspondent], Messrs D. Ritchie and W. Anderson of Waipukurau. were visitors to Stockton during the Christmas holi-, days and were the guests of Mr. and Mrs. H. L. Evans. Twenty years ago Mr. Ritchie was an employee of'the Westport-Stockton Coal Company, leaving the district for Australia in 1923, returning to New Zealand five years ago. Mr. and Mrs. J. Lavery have returned after a holiday in Wellington. , ' Mr. G. Gilbert has returned from a visit to Dunedin. Mr and Mrs J. Wilson have returned from a visit to Wellington. Mr. Wilson had been on the injured list for some months prior to the Christmas holidays, and resumed work on Wednesday. Mr. and Mrs. J. Fitzsimmons and Mr and Mrs H. Fitzsimmons were vis’tors to Greymouth last week. Mrs. L. Morganty last week visited her father, Mr. E. ißerdinner, of Westnort Mr and Mrs T. Carroll have returned after spending the holidays at Westport. . The Stockton mine resumed operations last Wednesday. Mr. Frank Finnigan of Dunedin, who has been a student of the Christchurch Training College for the past three years is spending ’the term holidays as the guest of Mr. and Mrs. C Steele. ‘Mr. H. Morganty of Westport, was here last week cn a visit. Mesdames K. Currie, B. Stewart and Gilbert have returned from Wellington where they spent the Christmas holidays. Mr. and Mrs. F. Connew and son returned last week after a holiday at Mokihinui.

The Public Works Camp at Nb. 3 loop will soon be completed. Someone has christened it: “Webb Town.” When the employees arrive, .the road to the new coal lease will be commenced. It is anticipated that it will take approximately five to six months to complete the job. The new lease has about twenty years’ work for the employees of the West-port-Stockton Coal Company, and, as coal is such a valuable asset to the national life of New Zealand, the most up-td-date methods of extraction should be employed to win every ton nossible.
