Opera House Finall to-night: “Kid Glove Killer” and' “Hi’ya Chum.” Next 'attraction (commences to-mor-row Tuesday): “it’s a Date” starring Deanna Durbin. 'IT’S A .DATE.” Heralded a s Deanna Durbin’s greatest picture “It’s a Date” commences at the Opera House to-morrow (Tuesday) with Walter Pidgeon, Kay Francis, Lewis Howard and Eugene Pallette in featured roles. It has the most colourful setting—• Hawaii —in which Deanna has ever appeared. Its comedy rates with the funniest ever screened and its romance is as poignant as the most successful hit-makers in Hollywood can produce. The story begins on : Broadway, moves speedily to Maine and finally to Hawaii. Deanna and Miss Francis are offered the same stage role by a producer a part Deanna tries to refuse when she learns her mother wants to play it. Pretending love for Pidgeon and saying she will “give up her career,” Deanna sets out in pursuit of the hapless Pidgeon, whose love for the mother is secretly returned. Who gets the role, and who gets the man, is unfolded in a surprising and suitable finish to one of the year’s most entertaining pictures. > The singing star has four numbers: “Love is All,” “Loch Lomond,” Schubert’s “Ave Maria,” “Musetta's Street Song” from “La Boheme,” and “Gvpsy Lullaby,” while Harry Owens and His Royal Hawaiians contribute two, “Rhythm of the Islands,” and “It Happened in Kaloha.” Regent Theatre Finally To-night: “Shining Victory.” Commencing '.Tuesday: “Pr|ide of the Yankees,” starring Gary Cooper. The memorable story of a man who refused to be beaten is- the basis of “The Pride of the Yankees,” Samuel Goldwyn’s stirring screen version of the life of a famous sports hero, commencing at the Regent Theatre on Tuesday. Gary Cooper is starred in the title role of the celebrated ball-player, Lou Gehrig, who in his fourteen years with the team establishes scores of records, became one of America’s foremost baseball players, and fought gallantly against the incurable disease that finally compelled him to retire. Gehrig’s actual baseball exploits however, play but a small part in the film. It is the unaided climb to fame of the one-time janitor’s son and his inspiring romance with pretty Eleanor Twitchell that makes the picture an engrossing human story and lends it the authentic realism that characterises the production. Teresa Wright has the feminine lead as the Chicago society girl Who married Gehrig and loyally stood by him to the end. Included- in the splendid cast are Babe Ruth, Walter Brennan, Dan Duryea and Virginia Gilmore. Veloz and Yolanda, noted ballroom dancers .appear in sequence with Ray Noble and his orchestra.
