REEFTON J.C.

BIG TOP TAKES IRVING ■ .MEMORIAL Raging Main Surprises ALL NIGHT’S DOUBLE. The mid-summer meeting of the Reefton Jockey Club was held on Saturday last in glorious weather before a large attendance. The track was in good order and some fast times were recorded. The totalisator handled the sum of £14,926, as against £86454 on the corresponding day last year, an increase of £62804. Results'were as follows:—

\ NOBLE HACK HANDICAP Of One Mile:— 9/8 RAGING MAIN, Mr. F. Escott’s b.g., Te Monanui— Knockalong, car. 7.9 (Tozer) 1 3/3 PEDANTIC (C. Stokes) .... 2 1/1 HAMISH (Johnston) 3 Scratched: Uitlle Secret, Owaka, Hurry Home. Won by a neck; a length. Time 1.43 2-5. » The first race of the day was marred by three horses falling as the field swung out of the front straight after completing two furlongs. At the time Raging Main was in the van, closely followed by Olga’s Choice, Mike and Sierra Sue. The last-named lost her balance and fell, and then Early Night and Wildfire who were following both slipped in endeavouring to avoid Sierre Sue, both falling. Down the back Raging Main and Olga’s Choice were piloting a bunch headed by Pedantic and Hamish. Passing the three furlongs Olga’s Choice was the actual leader, but as they made the bent! into the straight Pedantic moved up on the inner and was .just clear of Raging Main as they entered the last furlong. Raging Main came again over the last bit to get the verdict by a neck with a length to Hamish, then Olga’s Choice. J'ust as the field passed the winning post Nightshot slipped and fell and Recompense, who was just in behind also lost her rider. NOVICE STAKES. Of Five Furlongs*:— 5/4 GAY WELLS Mr. J. T. Part- ■ ridge’s br.m.. Nightmarch— Grey Wells. 8.10 (Thomson) 1 2/2 SILVER SAL (Drinkwater) ... 2 4/5 WINNING AGNES (Stokes) . 3 Scratched: Inborough, Olga’s Choice. Won by a head; half a length.’ Time 1.2 4-5. Leaderine was quick to reach the front and after a furlong she was two lengths clear of Winning Agnes, Silver Sal, Falconbridge, Gay Wells and Helenora. Into the straight the order remained the same. Anything had a chance half-way up the straight. First it appeared as if Falconbridge would come one, then Silver Sal, but in the last 50 yards Gay Wells came through in the middle to beat Silver Sal by a neck with Winning Agnes a length away, then almost in line with her Helenora and Bex.

BROADWAY TROT. Of One Milo, 2.27 Class:— 2/4 GALVENA, Mr F. J. Williams’ b.g., Gaillard —Romantic, 36 yds. (Butt) 1 3/2 VICE-REGAL (C. ißerkitt) .. 2 5/5 GOLDEN GLOW (D. Bennett). 3 Scratched: Caltex, Ovend, Clairetown. Won bv a length; same. Times: 2.12; 2.15; 2.15 2-5. Little Audrey was first to begin and at the end of two furlongs she was leading Vice-Regal. Golden Glow and Rivette, with two lengths to Galvena, who was just in front of Jack’s Treasure. This order was maintained until half-way round the top bend where Vice-Regal took over from Golden Glow with Galvena and Jack’s Treasure improving from the back. Inside the distance Galvena tackled Golden Glow end Vice-Regal and has was going away at the post to win by a length from Vice-Regal with a similar distance to Golden Glow. Close up came Jack’s Treasure, Little Audrey and Rivette. HIGH-WEIGHT HANDICAP. Of Seven Furlongs:— 2/1 ALL NIGHT, Mr. W. Payne’s b.g., Nightly-Clorane (A.

Stove) 1 1/2 WISE GIRL (Barrington) .. 2 .3/3 GREENBANK (Stokes) .... 3 Scratched: Improvident. Won by a neck; a length. Time 1.27 4-5. From an excellent despatch All Night jumped out best, but as they went out of the straight the first time Gunyah had taken over from Greenbank, All Night and Wise Girl. As they passed the four All Night appeared to lose ground and Gunyah and Greenbank were just clear of wise Girl and Gay Parade. Crossing the (op there was not much change except that All Night appeared to- again meet trouble and he dropped back a couple of places. Half-way up the straight Greenbank got the better of Gunyah but he was immediately challenged by Wise Girl and All Night. The latter, ridden out, came away in the last few strides to win by a neck from Wise Girl. Greenbank was a length away with Gunyah and Hughsotis at the head of the others. IRVING MEMORIAL i HANDICAP. Of One mile and a-quarter: —• 4/4 BIG TOP, Mr. J. Coyle’s br.g., Ringmaster—Trivet (Lunn) . 1 3/3 AUTHENTIC, car 7.2 (D. Stove) 2 2/1 OWAKA (Barrington) 3 Scratched: Mike. Hurry Home. Won by two lengths; one. Time 2.6 4-5. The distance event for hacks was a great success and the race was full of interest right throughout. It is doubtful if the time 2.6 4-5 has even been bettered on Coast courses, a solid pace being set by Silvei’ Sal and Little Secret right from the start. Passing the stands with a round to go Little Secret and Silver Sal were piloting a close running field, their nearest attendants being Raging Main, Upton, Authentic and Big Top. Just before the home turn was reached Big Top moved up very fast to join the leaders', Silver Sal and Little Secret, with Authentic and Owaka not far away. Once the straight was reached Big Top came away to be two lengths clear of his field, an advantage which he maintained to the judge. Authentic w.as staying on in second place. In a great battle for' third, Owaka beat Rockery who came from a long way back in the las', two furlongs. Next came Silver Sal and Little Secret. STEWARDS’ HACK HANDICAP, of Six and a-half Furlongs:— i 3/3 IN CHANCERY.. Mr. T. E. J'ones’ b.f., Solicitor General — Royal Baby, car. 8.0 (Thomson) . 1 7/5 HUGHSOTIS, car. 8.2 (Brodie) .2 1/2 ROUT (Stokes') 3 Scratched: Gay Wells, Croupier’s Pride, Pedantic, Olga’s Choice, Lex, Highland Dance. Won by two lengths; same. Time 1.21. The start was delayed through Retainer breaking through the tapes and despite the efforts of his rider, he completed a little over a circuit before being pulled up. Retainer was then withdrawn at the instance of hi,s owner. Rout got the worst of the start and the leaders as the field left the straight were In Chancp>rv and Sherwood Forest from Blue Coat, Helenora .and Hughsotis. There was no change ujitil they starightened up for home. In Chancery be’ncr just ahead of Hughsot's. Blue Coat and Winning Agnes. At this stage Rout was showing up wide out. In the run home In Chan-

eery more than held her own to win by two lengths from Hughsotis, who was a similar distance to Rout. Blue Coat and Winning Agnes were next.

REEFTON TROT. Of One and a-quarter Miles:— 2/1 JACK’S TREASURE, Messrs C. E. & L. Walsh’s blk.g., Jack Potts—Queen’s Treasure 12. yds. (C. Walsh) t 1 1/2 GALVENA, 36 yds. (Butt) .. 2 4/4 ROBLE RETA, 12 yds, (M. B. Edwards) 3

When the barriers lifted all began Well with the exception of Galvena, who gallobed out, losing a little ground. Coming through the straight the first time Wavell was just m front of Jack’s Treasure, Noble Reta and Northern Lass, with five lengths to Galvena with Warline next. Down the back Jack’s Treasure put a break of three lengths on Wavell with a gap to Noble Reta, followed by Northern Lass and Galvena. Halfway across the top Noble Reta and Galvena started to bridge the gap and in a punishing finish Jack’s Treasure hung on well to beat Galvena by half a length. Noble Reta was two lengths away third, with Northern Lass a fair way back fourth. FAREWELL HANDICAP. Of Seven Furlongs:— 1/1 ALL NIGHT (A. Stove) 10.4 1 3/3 MAURETANIA (H. Lunn) 8.7 2 2/2 GREENBANK (K. Thomson) 8.1 3 Length each way. Time 1.27 1-5. Scr.: Wise Girl, Little Secret, Nightglass, Rout, Big Top. There was some heavy wagering on All Night and he pulled his supporters through after a brief struggle with Mauretania over the last furlong. The favourite was again the first to break the line but. he was content to pull in behind Gunyah as they turned out of the straight, with Mauretania and Greenbank next. Passing the three Mauretania ran up alongside Gunyah and as they turned for home Mauretania showed out from Gunyah with All Night pushing through in the middle of the other two. Half a furlong from home All Night drew up to be on level terms with Mauretania and getting the better of the mare, he won going away by a length with Greenbank. who came home well, a similar distance back, then Gunyah. i
