CURE OF CANCER

DEFINITE SUCCESS Pills. Eliminate One Form [Aust. & N.Z. Press Assn.l (Rec. 12.10.) LONDON, Dec. 14. Successful control of one form ot cancer with pills of a synthetic chemical substance wa s disclosed by Professor Edward Charles Dodds, at tne annual meeting of the British Empire Cancer Campaign. He clearly warned that the discovery has thusiar been confined solely to cancer of the prostrate. Professor Dodds described the results obtained from the treatment of malignant disease prostate with synthetic oestrogens as dramatic and striking. He said: “During t'he last year or so, an American had reported descriptions of treatment of this terrible disease bv the administration of substances by the mouth, and the subsequent complete disappearance of the symptoms without any other treatment. We are thankful that the reports of the American work have completely been confirmed and that, for the first time in the history of mankind, it is possible to state that one form of cancer can be completely controlled and the patient rendered symptom-free by the administration of a few pills by the mouth daily. The Registrar-General’s 1941 figures indicate that this discovery will result in the elimination of intense suffering and death from cancer prostrate in approximately four thousand persons annually in England and Wales alone. Whether this uncovers an entirely new field ot cancer research has still to be determined, and will be investigated. Professor Dodds added: That Britain’s cancer campaign could take a certain credit for the discovery. Their American colleagues had made the actual .observations of cases, but the weapon used was forged in Britain bv Englishmen working directly under "the influence, and with the support, of the cancer campaign. Tire synthetic chemical used in the treatment was dietlylstilboestrol. The cancer campaign’s progress m jne last ten years constituted a body’ ol discovery so substantial as., to justiiy the belief that the campaign was entering a new phase.
