PATRIOTIC QUOTA

Greymouth’s Contribution PATRIOTIC COUNCIL’S DISCUSSION. Some discussion on the disposal .of a sum of £5,500 held by the Greymouth Patriotic Committee, largely as a result of its big effort in the Queen Carnival, took place while the financial statement was being considered at last evening's meeting of the Westlanct Provincial Patriotic Council. Both Mr. F. A. Kitchingham and Mr. J. W. Greenslade, in seeking an assurance that when the amount was handed over to the Provincial Council it would pay off Greymouth’s 1943-44 quota of £3,820, said that tne Greymouth public had been promised that a big effort would not be necessary this year, and they wanted to keep faith. Mr. Kitchingham said there was also a sum of £333 to be divided between the Grey County and Runanga and Brunner Boroughs.

Mr. Greenslade said that if another £3,000 above the quota was raised it might go to the welfare fund. Mr. J. A. Murdoch moved that £5,000 of the £5,500 to be sent by the Greymouth Committee be invested in the Liberty Loan. This might be used for a post-war fund. -■ IMr. Greenslade asked if any amount sent by Greymouth in excess of its levy could be ear-marked for the Welfare Fund. The chairman (Mr. A. R. Elcock) said that that would not be possible. If money were ear-marked and other districts failed to reach their quotas the provincial quota could not then be met.

Mr. Murdoch’s motion was finally carried on the understanding that tile amount to be paid over would meet Greymouth's quota' for the . coming year. Mr. Kitchingham said the idea in Greymouth was that there should be ample funds to meet post-war needs. What they wanted Council to tell the public was that n the war finished to-morrow there would be at least £30,000 available to provide for the men coming back.
