ARMY JOBS

RETURNED MEN ENTITLED TO BE ON TEMPORARY STAFF. AUCKLAND, Nov. 26. A resolution asking the Dominion executive of the Returned Services Association to urge that preference be given to returned men in employment in the Army temporary start, where the position is such that the serviceman is able to live at home, was passed by the Auckland executive of the association last night It was also decided to ask for a thorough “combing out” of the present temporary staff personnel with a view to their positions being taken by returned men. In moving the resolution, Mr C. Beer contended that, where possible, men returning from the war with the necessary qualifications should be employed by the Army and that the present employees who would thus be displaced should be placed in essential industry. “Some of these men in ‘cushy’ Armv jobs are frightened that their jobs will be given to returned men,” he said. "There are numbers of men coming back who are well qaulifled by their experience overseas to do the work these men are doing. The Army, by employing returned men, would enable their rehabilitation to be gradual, and this is something to be desired.” Mr Sinclair Reid said that, in the interests of economy, there should be an investigation into the whole question of personnel for the temporary staff. It was a man-power question and men were needed elsewhere.

“The men from this war are now getting what we got after the last war,” said Mr C. A. Snedden. “Some men who have made no sacrifices are still in Army and civilian jobs which returned men should be able to Illi. The Army should be asked to disclose its policy in this matter.”
