JAP SUPPLY BASES

Bombed in New Guinea (Rec. 6.30) "SYDNEY, Nov. 30. The main Japanese air base in north-east New Guinea, at Wewa'k, where a concentration of one hundred enemy planes was recently reported, was again put under attack, large fires being started in dispersal areas by Allied escorted heavy bombers. There was no Japanese fighter interception. , , . . Mitchell medium bombers which attacked Wewak, .on Friday were equipped with a 75mm. cannon. The gun, mounted in the nose of the planes, fires a 131 b shell with devastating accuracy at long ranges. Such equipment has been in use for some time in the South-west Pacific, but it has been on the secret list. Merchant vessels have been sunk alter strafing attacks with this gun. (Rec. 9.10) SYDNEY, Nov. 30 For the second successive clay Liberator bombers, on Sunday, heavily attacked the Japanese supply base at Wewak and Boram. Airfields were attacked at medium height by several waves of Liberators, which dropped 94 tons of bombs on disposal areas .and supply dumps, causing a number of large explosions and fires. The raid was carried out without air opposition. Allied observers say. that it is possible the Japanese have found it unprofitable to match their fighters against Allied heavily armed bombers.
