FIRE BRIGADES CONFER

WEST COAST ASSOCIATION MEETS AT OTIRA. Delegates from all the fire brigades in the district attended the annual confernece of the West Coast Fire Brigades’ Association at Otira on Friday evening. Past-President J'. Grant (Greymouth) presided. An apology was received from Superintendent A. White (Greymouth). The balance-sheet showed a credit balance of £32 10s. Assets were £250. The following officers were elected: President, Foreman Beynon (Kumara); vice-president, Deputy-Super-intendent Preston (Hokitika), Branchman McEnaney (Greymouth) and Superintendent Benfell (Otira); Trustee. Superintendent White ( Greymouth); secretary-treasurer, Mr J. G. Walton (Greymouth). The Reefton Brigade was granted permission to hold a jubilee competition in February on the occasion of their seventieth anniversary. It was decided to hold the 1944 demonstration in Hokitika. ANNUAL DEMONSTRATION The Association held its annual demonstration at Otira on Saturday in perfect weather. The ten competing brigades found arrangements most satisfactory and were favoured with a splendid pressure of lOOlbs. At the conclusion of the demonstration reference was made to the hospitable manner in which the visitors had been received, special mention being made to the able manner in which the Otira secretary (Mr , J. Bell) had carried out hi,? duties on the ground and looked after the interests of the visiting firemen. The Russell Shield for the highest aggregate points, was won by the Hokitika Brigade. Detailed results were:— Two men hose and standpipe (wet) event: Otira Railway 41sec,. 1; Hokitika, 42 2-ssec, 2; Cobden 43sec, 3. Four men motor hose (dry) event: Hokitika, 28sec, 1; Kumara 28 4-5 sec. 2; Denniston. 32sec, 3. Three men disabled hose (wet) event: Otira 47 2-ssec, 1; Hokitika 50sec, 2; Greymouth Railway 53 2-5 sec, 3. Four men hose and stand pipe (wet) event: Kumara 40sec, 1; Otira 43 4-ssec, 2; Hokitika 44sec, 3. Four men motor pump (wet) event: Grevmouth 77sec, 1; Kumara 81sec, 2; Greymouth Railway 84sec, 3. Four men camel hose motor (wet) event: Cobden 44 2-ssec, 1; Runanga 48sec. 2; Reef ton 48 3-ssec, 3. Aggregate points were: Hokitika 52t, Kumara 44, Cobden 42i, Otira 37, Greymouth 26i, Runanga 24, Greymouth Railway 23, Reefton 12i, Westport 12J, Denniston 9i. Trophy winners were: Russell Shield, Hokitika; Grogan Shield, Otira; Thomason Shield. Greymouth; Hislon Cup, Cobden; Benyon Cup, Kumara; Otira Citizens’ Cup, Otira; Fowlev Cup. Hokitika; Rose Cup and two Gold Medals, Otira; Clarence McKay Cup, Runanga. Cash prizes were won as follows: Kumara £B, Otira £7, Hokitika £6 10s, Grevmouth £4, Cobden £4, Runanga £2. ’
